Fatal motor vehicle accidents are increasing, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The federal agency recently reported that 43,443 Americans died in motor vehicle accidents in 2005, up from 42,836 in 2004.

The report also stated:

• Car accident injuries dropped by about 3%, from 2.8 million in 2004 to 2.7 million in 2005.
• Alcohol-related deaths stayed at about the same level, with 16,919 killed in 2004 and 16,885 in 2005.
• Pedestrian deaths increased from 4,675 to 4,881.
• Fatalities from large truck crashes declined slightly, from 5,235 to 5,212.
• Over half of the motor vehicle occupants killed in 2005 were not wearing car safety belts.

Earlier this year, a federal agency spokesman called upon all citizens to do more to improve road safety. He said: "Every year this country experiences a national tragedy that is as preventable as it is devastating. We have the tools to prevent this tragedy – every car has a safety belt, every motorcycle rider should have a helmet and everyone should have enough sense to never drive while impaired."
